Abstract

Rhetoric is part of a good quality speech. Arabic rhetoric in particular is contributing with other figures of speech to the quality of translated texts into Arabic providing text with clarity and metaphorical force. Methods of translating figures of speech vary from one language to another depending on the purpose of translation and linguistic and cultural norms prevailing in society. The study highlights literary values pertaining to simile, metaphor and metonymy. It also discusses strategies of translating these images , difficulties encountering the translator and methods used in overcoming these difficulties. The study is provided with practical, illustrative translations in English and Arabic.
