MATERIALS AND METHODS. The clay used was sodium montmorillonite (SWy-2) obtained from the Source Clays Repository, Clay Minerals Society, Columbia, MO. HPLC-grade methanol, phenyltrimethylammoniurn (PTMA), hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA), tetraphenylphosphonium (TPP), methyltriphenylphosphonium (MTPP), tetrabutylphosphonium (TBP), tetraheptylammonium (THA) were purchased as chloride salts from Sigma-Aldrich (Sigma Chemical Co., St. Louis, MO, USA; Aldrich Chemical Co., Milwaukee, WI, USA).
