Abstract

Recently, the energy resources have been decreased while the global energy demand is expected to grow rapidly. This has led the authorities associated with traffic management to seek various solutions for enhancing energy efficiency of the huge numbers of lamps used in traffic light systems. Hence, many metropolitan areas, like Istanbul, have started using traffic lights equipped with LEDs instead of the conventional incandescent bulbs. The energy saving, low maintenance costs, traffic and road security improvements all contribute to an environment friendly and economical configuration. In this paper, the (R&D) department at ISBAK Inc., demonstrates the benefits of switching the old-style incandescent bulbs to the LED based lamps in traffic signalization system at Istanbul as a case study that will may be useful for other municipalities and researchers.
