TitlePsychological Adjustment and its Relationship to the Value System and Personality Traits among Policewomen in Gaza Governorates

Abstract

The study aimed to find out the relationship between psychological adjustment and value system, and personality traits among women working in police in the Gaza governorates, in the light of some demographic variables. In her attempt to achieve the study objectives, the researcher used the analytical-descriptive approach, and relied on the personal data form, the psychological adjustment scale, and value system scale prepared by the researcher and the scale of the big five factors of the personality prepared Costa and McCrea,. The study population consisted of all the women working in the police whose number was (97). The researcher use the comprehensive survey of all members of the original study population, of which (78) working women responded, which represented (80.41%) of the population. The study concluded that the psychological level of adjustment among women working in the police in the Gaza Strip reached (78.684%). The domain of the sense of belonging was ranked first with a percentage weight of (86.666%), followed by the second domain of the sense of value with a percentage weight of (82.194%), followed by the third domain of reliance on self with a percentage weight of (78.90%), then came the fourth domain sense of freedom with a percentage weight of (74.416%), and last came the domain of freedom from neurotic diseases with a percentage weight of (71.226%). It turned out that the value system was high and reached (82.694%). The domain of religious values was ranked first by (91.678%), followed by the one of political values by (85.606%), then the domain of cognitive values by (83.398%), followed by the domain of social values which was ranked fourth field by (81.448%), followed by the domain of the aesthetic values with a percentage weight of (79.33%), and last came the domain of economic values with a percentage weight of (70.526%). The study results showed that the dedication factor in personality traits was ranked first with a percentage weight of (83.07%), then agreeableness factor with a percentage weight of (80.132%), followed by the domain of openness to experience with a percentage weight of (73.952%), followed by the extroversion factor with a percentage weight of (70.428%), and final came the factor of neuroticism with a percentage weight of (56.702%). The study found that there was a relationship between the psychological adjustment and value system, and a relationship between the psychological adjustment and the big five personality factors. There were no statistically significant differences at the level of psychological adjustment and the value system and the big five personality factors attributed to the variables of marital status, education level, age, and rank. The study recommended the need for relying on specific criteria in the procedures used when selecting and hiring female employees in the police, with the appropriate value systems, and personality traits appropriate for police work. The study also recommended setting up guidance programs intended for promoting the personality traits beneficial for the work of women in the police.
