In this thesis, a waveguide structure consisting of 4-layers and comprising metallic ultra- thin film has been investigated. The ultra-thin film metal is sandwiched between Sio2 substrate and silicon layer that is directly subjected to air. This waveguide structure has been studied as a model of solar cell. TE and TM modes are presented and the reflectance, the transmittance and the absorption are derived using the transfer matrix approach. A computer program has been developed to solve equations and plot various relations. The study found that the minimum reflectance and the maximum transmittance can be obtained from the solar cell containing a metallic layer without additional anti-reflective layers. It was found that the waveguide structure with Cu or Ag as ultra-thin film exhibited the best performance so that they can be both used to improve the efficiency of solar cells.
