TitleImproving Bidders Competitiveness Strategies in Construction Projects - Gaza Strip

Abstract

Construction industry is considered as one of the most important industries in Palestine, competitiveness has also become one of the hottest topics, and consequently, competitiveness can be a useful indicator of the long-term health of an industry. The aim of this research is to improve and enhance bidding & competitiveness process in construction projects. The objectives of the study were achieved through literature review about competitiveness to identify the factors affecting contractor's competitiveness behavior in construction projects and then a questionnaire survey was conducted and 125 factors were identified, categorized into nine groups, evaluated and ranked from contractor's perspectives. 88 questionnaires were distributed to all five construction contractors' categories in Gaza Strip. Besides, two case studies for two projects were bidding, including the first three contractors competing for each project, these case studies were conducted as a major part on this research to evaluate and investigate the competitiveness practices in Gaza Strip Construction industry. The result obtained from the questionnaire was developed to extract a model for measuring competitiveness . The understanding of the key factors of a competition strategy will contribute to identifying an effective competition strategy. Factor analysis technique was used to develop the model measuring and forecasting companies' competitiveness strategies. This model includes five clusters with 18 factors. The most weight was shown in company characteristics group that has about seven factors in the model. The model will help contractors to evaluate their competitiveness strength and increase their chances to win the contracts. The results of this study recommended the contractors to setup continuous development and training programs for their staff. The clients and consultants are recommended to carry out periodical meetings, training sessions with the contractors to explain and provide the supportive information.
