The management of the built heritage by public actors in the conservation area of Constantine is confronted to many difficulties. In addition, the predominance of the residential character implies the existence of particular social practices of heritage spaces appropriation. On the opposite of the public approach of the rehabilitation based on the institutionalization and professional expertise, the inhabitants practice ‘self-rehabilitation’ works on their properties, by different ways. The purpose of this article is to study the self-rehabilitation works executed by residents, in the conservation area of Constantine, in order to know their contribution to the conservation of the built heritage. This study was based on a qualitative survey. The collected data shows the richness of the different ways of self-rehabilitation, according to the logics of the inhabitants. Contributing to the understanding of these practices can help to overcoming the reductive vision towards resident actions on the built heritage, and encouraging the authorities to assist the good practices.
